Our Distillery
Magura Zamfirei Distillery is located in Calinesti Commune, Teleorman County, Romania. With over 15 years of experience in agriculture and in the cultivation of wheat, barley, rye and corn, we have brought the farm to the point where the latest generation technology, automation and digitization are present. For us, it was a natural step to move from farming to distillates, being surrounded by all the ingredients and all the expertise necessary to make premium, 100% natural products. This is how we ended up founding the Magura Zamfirei Distillery.
FROM LEGEND TO INSPIRED DISTILLATES
Our farm has fields stretching to the base and around the legendary Magura, about which we are already convinced that you have heard a lot. Our hillock (Magura) is a tell-type settlement, an artificial hill, while also a human settlement abandoned for several centuries. Over time, our “mound” acquired the name of Magura Zamfirei.
Recent documents from the Calinesti archive show that near that hill used to be a tavern owned by “a certain Zamfira”, where travelers stopped to rest. The alembic in which Zamfira prepared her drinks is now lost, but the place where the tavern was located has kept its magic.
After hundreds of years, we continue Zamfira’s story from within our new distillery. The name “Magura Zamfirei Distillery” was correlated with its surroundings.
We’ve developed a series of stories starting from the little information we had on Zamfira, her pub and Magura. Thus, Magura Zamfirei becomes a symbol for Teleorman county and a point of tourist attraction. Furthermore, Maia Morgerstern accepted the challenge to bring Zamfira and her stories to life.
We’re set out to create original stories with Romanian roots, modernized and connected to Zamfira and her tavern near Magura. We reimagined a local legend that can bring national pride and a possible international recognition.

THE FOUNDER
Alexandru Haita is a farmer for over 15 years. For him, the idea of the distillery came from his passion and love for agriculture and distillates, from the concept of doing things differently and, we want to believe, from Zamfira’s genius.
Every product born in our distillery will be made under the careful coordination of Alexandru, but also alongside you, the COMMUNITY, with your feedback and involvement. Thank you for following us and spreading the word about the beautiful Zamfira and the Magura Zamfirei Distillery.
Founding distillery (2021)
The foundations of Magura Zamfirei Distillery have been laid, we are building the first annexes for the distillation process, bottling and labeling, laboratory and storage.
Launch of the first product: Dry Gin No. 4 (2022)
DRY GIN NO. 4, the first artisanal distilled gin, 100% Romanian, the first of its kind to appear after a long time. A complex and refined drink with a distinguished and elegant finish. The first 1000 bottles are signed by the founder.
Maia Morgenstern becomes the Voice of Zamfira (2022)
Maia Morgerstern accepted the challenge to bring to life the stories from Zamfira’s tavern. Maia Morgenstern played Zamfira, and her voice accompanied all the materials that the Magura Zamfirei Distillery subsequently released. All converge towards the association between the inspiration given by the spirit of Zamfira, the famous innkeeper from Teleorman, and our modern Distillery.
We are launching the Wolfpack Gin range (2022)
The new range of gins is called Wolfpack in honor of Alexandru – HAITa – owner, farmer and distiller. In December we launched the first drink in the range – Moonlight Gin, a blue colored drink with a refined, complex and contemporary taste.
We are launching the Rum range (2022)
Haiduc Rum – White: the first white rum 100% produced in Romania in the Magura Zamfirei Distillery, using as the only ingredient the best molasses from sugar cane, originally from South America.
